Kebi was referred to me when she bought her dress at Anna Be’ Bridal Boutique in Denver’s Highlands neighborhood and I couldn’t be more thrilled. She and Ian are the kind of people who just felt like friends when I met them. Maybe its because Ian and I unknowingly grew up in adjacent Pennsylvania towns, but it’s probably more that they’re just rad people. And I like rad people.

At our first meeting Kebi said to me that for her and Ian “the big decisions always came easy”. It wasn’t hard for the two of them, after meeting on the West Coast, to choose Denver Colorado as the place they would move and start their lives together. And it wasn’t hard to decide to get married, because they agree on the important things in life. So last weekend, many states later (Kebi is from Iowa and met Ian in Oregon, I’m from Pennsylvania, here via Boston) we met in Boulder for their awesome engagement session.

Guys, I can’t wait for your wedding in February! It’s going to be fabulous.

Here are a few images I found so far that I love:

When I started taking photography courses over a decade ago I shot film. Kodak Tri-X Black and White film. I labored over taking the perfect roll of 24 (or if I was lucky 36) frames. I meticulously metered, composed and timed the perfect image. I spent hours in the darkroom inhaling developer, measuring the proper chemical ratios, agitating the film in it’s bath for the just right amount of time until that moment when you could pull it out of the canister and see 24 perfectly exposed miniature images in negative which would beget a whole series of additional steps to develop an actual positive image on 8×10 paper. It was heaven, but man was it time consuming.

Digital opened up a world of opportunity. I could shoot endlessly and thus I wasn’t afraid to take risks, wasn’t afraid to fail and I learned. Since 2005 when I picked up my first 20D I’ve expanded my skills in ways I never dreamed. But it’s also created a more hurried style of shooting to catch every moment as it happens rather than explore the opportunity for artistic composition and expression.

I recently stumbled across my high school yearbook and a note from my photography instructor. She wrote that from my first roll of film she knew I had what it would take to succeed. She said she knew I “was going to take this medium to places it usually doesn’t go”. It’s funny to read now, now that I know and have learned from so many incredible photographers, now that I can look back on a creatively dry spell after college where I didn’t really take time to foster my love of photography and now when I find myself photographing in a much more documentary way than I ever did in high school.

Anyway the whole point is… I’m dragging out my film camera again. I brought it along to an engagement session last weekend and I’m hoping that it brings back a sense of personal expression that I haven’t been cultivating as strongly as I’d like. Here’s a photo of Kebi & Ian at Flagstaff Mountain in Boulder Colorado. I like the grain, but I’m not sure the scan is as sharp as the negative. I’ll have to figure out how best to meld my digital and film world!

I always look at the upcoming month as a fresh slate, full of opportunity. Back in August (it feels like so long ago) I was asked by colleagues to travel to the east coast and the mountains of Colorado for upcoming September weddings. Of course I jumped at the opportunity, because I adore traveling! At the time it really didn’t occur to me just how busy I’d be or the battle my immune system would be facing in the aftermath, but it’s a small price to pay for being able to do what I love.

I was born and raised on the East Coast so I couldn’t resist traveling with Kara Pearson of Kara Pearson Photography to Connecticut, by way of NYC. I spent a couple days visiting with friends Michelle (I photographed her wedding in PA this past July) and college friend Austin in Manhattan. We all got together for some fabulous Martinis at VNYL in Midtown. They have the coolest bathrooms ever, no kidding! I also took a quick trip to B&H Photo and Video, which is basically MECCA for photographers and videographers. Here are a couple shots from Allie and John’s wedding in Connecticut. They had a gorgeous ceremony partially officiated by John’s father and Allie’s family hosted the incredible reception that continued well into the night even after the bride and groom took off!

I love this look between father and daughter just before they walked down the aisle!

John’s father conducted an amazing prayer with the groomsmen and made me cry before the service. It was very moving. Notice the ring bearer in the middle? He was such a champ all day long.

The service was filled with beautiful music. Here he bride and groom sing together with their guests. John’s sisters sang when Allie walked down the aisle and I don’t think there was a dry eye in the house.

Everyone kept talking about Allie’s “big eyes” all night. Here you can see what they mean!

These birds are so freaking cute. They topped the cake. John’s had a law book in his wing… he just completed law school. I love.

The following day I was lucky to catch up with my parents in Rye NY for a day of fun. They brought my nephew Kyle who is quite possibly the cutest kid on the planet and we ran around the waterfront and the town of Rye just enjoying our good company. The weather was perfect for a day of relaxation, but I managed to “work” a bit and get a couple shots of our day. Isn’t Kyle CUUUUUTE?

I also had the pleasure of working with Dreamtime Images up in Vail earlier this month. Camille and Miah had a beautiful ceremony at The Lionsquare in Vail. They had a lovely cocktail hour up at the top of the mountain (UNBELIEVABLE VIEWS) just a short Gondola ride away from the reception which turned into one serious party. Not only were the bride and groom’s friends living it up at the photo booth and on the dance floor, but every family member young and old was having the time of their lives! September weddings are for party people. Here’s one image I grabbed that really showcases the backdrop. Also don’t you love brides who traverse mountain tops?!

Now I’m back in Colorado playing catch up, meeting with clients for 2010 and finishing up some beautiful albums from 2009. I’ll have to post photos of those too, so stay tuned!

I love our neighborhood. The sounds of the outdoor concert wafting with summer air through open windows. Everyone collected nightly on their porches, chatting away and enjoying the breeze. The cling clang of the scrap metal collectors wandering through the alleys at dawn. The eclectic mix of gardens and summer smells as I walk the dog in the quiet of the day just beginning.

This morning I slowed my pace to enjoy 20 paces of my favorite garden in Whittier. A magical plot of land overflowing with trumpet vines, squash, huge cotton-ball-looking tufted flowers as tall as I am and the sweet smell of roses and honeysuckle laced throughout. It is beyond time and place, something I never expect in the concrete jungle, but relish the experience of. As I shuffled towards the end of the block a woman popped out of the squash patch holding a knife. Not a scary woman with any ill intent. A woman grooming her incredible garden.

I took the opportunity to tell her how much I enjoyed her hard work. That the smell and the beauty were an oasis for me in my mornings and how impressed I was by it all. She then pointed to an enormous pile of cucumbers on the ground and asked if I would take some of her beautiful produce home with me. I was taken aback, but I’m certainly not one to shirk the kindness of others and I’ll admit I was curious–just what does a cucumber grown on the easement portion of a property in downtown Denver taste like? I’ll be sure to update you when I have a chance to try these guys. Until there here are a few pictures.

It’s nice to know that even in a relatively large city the kindness of strangers and the generosity of neighbors is still alive and well. In fact just 2 weeks ago I was very lucky that 2 good samaritans jumped out of their cars on a Tuesday morning to help this girl in need. Long story short there was a bit of a tiff between Ozzy and a stray dog. Both dogs were fine, everything ended well, but it may not have been so if it weren’t for those two people.

Days like today and that Tuesday morning remind me to never hesitate in life. To stop being afraid. To stand up and dance when the mood strikes me. To offer help when it might be needed. You never know whose life you’ll change…

Gavin is full of surprises. At least he was on his and Corrie’s one year wedding anniversary. I met him and Corrie bright and early for their first surprise – an anniversary photos session. Corrie had no idea what to expect from the day, but fortunately she looked fabulous as always and was up for anything! We ran around South Pearl St. in Denver and had fun finding good light and interesting spots to goof around. It was awesome seeing these two as giddy and taken with one another as they were on their wedding day, which of course led to the fabulous images you see below.

After our session Gavin and Corrie were off for some more excitement. Not the least of which was an excursion to Alaska for which they’d be flying out that evening! I hope you guys had a killer time in Alaska and a wonderful day celebrating your first wedding anniversary. Now on to the photos:

Dana & Kyle bubble over with energy, the kind of energy that is catching and takes you by surprise. And it’s that imperative energy that keeps them close even when Kyle is in Kansas City and Dana is here in Colorado. And their story fits so well. Meeting and falling in love quickly, honestly and with all they had. Committing to one another despite distance and planning a wedding not long after first meeting. Sometimes you just know.

I can identify with Dana & Kyle. It was, after all, the same kind of confidence that led Drew and I to move across the country together a handful of months after we started dating. We met for lunch some time in April which led to sort of officially calling one another boyfriend and girlfriend around May. By August we were in the car headed 1,984 miles west against the wishes and better judgment of parents and friends who hoped we weren’t being too rash. 4 years later I know it was the best decision I ever made.

Dana & Kyle, thank you for choosing me to photograph your engagement session. I had a great time meeting you guys. I wish you both the best of luck at your wedding in 2010. And Dana I hope moving to Kansas City is the best decision you ever make!

Last night I had every intention of being productive. Unfortunately my computer spent most of the evening disagreeing with me. I had a productive first half of my day, an awesome engagement shoot in Boulder and a plan to come home and get some editing done before turning in for a good night’s sleep to ready myself for tomorrow’s wedding. Sadly I spent all night rebooting the G5, dealing with cranky hard drives, coaxing failing memory cards back to life and trying to restore my corrupted Lightroom catalog. Once I finally got things up and running reasonably again there was no time for a real editing session. But I did take a quick spin through Dana & Kyle’s engagement shots from earlier today. And…

THEY.

ARE.

RADICAL!

These two are just rife with hilarious ideas. They have a pure love for one another that comes through in their ability to embrace each others silly side, and I think it shows in these images. Thank you Dana and Kyle for brightening up my otherwise frustrating night! You guys rock! Here are a few of my favs so far:

Dana was totally into this alley. I love a girl who digs alleys as much as I do!

Reunions

July 3, 2009

I was back in Pennsylvania for almost three full weeks last month. I managed to cover a lot of ground. From relaxing at the New Jersey Shore to partying in Manhattan and chilling with my family in Suburban PA I had a jam packed month. I was also very fortunate to photograph one of my best friend’s wedding. Michelle and I go way back. Like 6th grade classmates way back. I consider myself fortunate that we didn’t really fully find our friendship until Senior year of High School, because it’s enabled us to bond through the trials of young adulthood, over the long distance of colleges 500 miles away and we remain strong as we build our own lives and families away from our childhood home in Doylestown PA.

Michelle’s wedding was beautiful and I can’t wait to get some photos up, but I’ve only just begun the editing process. Today while sorting through images I found no less than 20 consecutive frames of Michelle and our good friend Evan, also from High School, that just cracked me up. And because it made me smile I took three of the funnier frames and made them into a silly animation to share! Hopefully more blogging soon, I have lots of photos to share just not as much time!

Party in Dtown!

July 2, 2009

Seems to be that all my posts reference my Dad right now… which I guess is fitting since he celebrated both Father’s Day and his birthday in June! Today I’m showing off some of the amazing photos he takes when he visits air shows. He’s an avid air-show-goer. I don’t really know the term for it, but he loves metal “birds”. He sent these to me in an email last night and I just can’t help but want to share them with the world. Now you know where I got my mad photo skills from – it runs in the family!

I love these candid crowd shots, they remind me of Gary Winnogrand’s work, but here we replace women with kids.

I immediately made this the wallpaper on my phone. Amazing right?!

In the brief period of time where I tolerated going to stand on hot tarmac and look straight into the blinding sun at these noisy things I did favor the Blue Angels. I can admit to these pilots being pretty darn talented.
