Sometimes I feel like things are just meant to be. It’s clear Emily and Dillon are one of those things. They have so much love it radiates off of them. I swear. You can almost hear it buzzing. And somehow I had the good fortune to become their wedding photographer. And then to top it all off, they put a ton of trust in me and just let me do my thang. I couldn’t be more pleased with the results, so much so I’m thinking it was meant to be. And I’m super stoked for their wedding on Saturday in Allenspark Colorado at Wild Basin Lodge. It’s going to be fantastic and beautiful and inspiring. Just like these two lovely people. :)

So, by some definitions I’m totally copping out on anyone that’s reading here. For which I apologize. I’ve been busy and I could make excuses all day. But instead I’m posting another teaser image from Beth & Brad’s lovely mountain wedding. IMG_9404

Soon I’ll be back with three really great engagement posts, multiple weddings and MAYBE a burlesque shoot. Yup burlesque! I’ve been a busy bee, traveling from Grand Junction to Denver, to Estes to Steamboat and back down the hill for weddings galore. It’s been fun, but I’m so busy! So I apologize for the cop out post, but at least its something!

Soooo I’m about to have a backlog of sessions to edit, but that means plenty of eye candy coming soon. Here’s two from an awesome engagement session yesterday! More fun to come!

Last weekend I photographed the lovely Emily and Dillon, who are so natural and true with one another. It’s refreshing. Plus they were willing to do whatever silly thing I asked. Even visit Tatooine and duplicate themselves. More soooon!

Who knew there was there was a gorgeous perfect spot for a wedding nestled in Estes Park at the YMCA? Brad and Beth did. Genius. Here’s a quick teaser photo of these too looking lovely and brilliant and totally smitten at their wedding yesterday. Brad gave the most wonderful speech thanking his family and friends for joining the couple on their special day. Then he thanked god for making Beth just the way she is and I got all teary eyed and it was bliss.

So my last post on albums is a great excuse to share some of my favorite album designs. A word about album design first.

The current trend that’s prevalent in wedding album design is simplicity. If you were to seek out some of the most notable wedding photographers in the world you’d stumble across loads of albums laid out mostly in rectangle and square formats with photos on white or black backgrounds. One of my favorite photographers, Jerry Ghionis, creates gorgeous, award-winning albums. They’re noted in the industry for their class and elegance. Jerry’s albums are about the photos, letting each one speak for itself and creating a cohesive story–which is what I hope to achieve in my albums. Below is Holly and Bill’s album from their 2009 wedding at Meadow Creek Bed & Breakfast in Pine Colorado. All but the first and last image are 2 page spreads, designed for a 10″ x 10″ square album. Enjoy!

For some, laughter may be the best medicine. For Chris and Sarah, it’s auto pilot. These two always seem to be having a good time when I meet with them and their laughter is contagious. As we shot these photos I could barely keep my camera steady as I belly laughed through the whole session. I can’t wait for their amazing Cheeseman Park/Backyard Wedding in June. If it’s nearly as much fun as their engagement session I’ll be in for a treat!

Okay. not laughing. But that’s because I wouldn’t let Sarah look at Chris. ;)

When it comes to planning your wedding a lot of thought and hard work go into the big day. There are a ton of details to plan and it’s not until you’ve planned a wedding that you understand the amount of effort (and money) that goes into creating a day that’s meaningful and memorable. So if you put hundreds or thousands of hours (and dollars) into your wedding shouldn’t you preserve the memories in a way that you’ll always remember them? That’s where wedding albums come in!

IMG_8500

What to think about when choosing your album:

1) Style

Since there are literally hundred of album companies out there it’s not hard to find something that reflects your style. Ask your photographer to show you a range of sample albums in different sizes, with different printing options.

Today its possible to choose from a variety of cover materials in an array of colors. Do you want something classic? Glamorous? Artsy? Modern? Companies such as Finao have taken the variety of album options to a whole new level. They have everything from zebra and ostrich print to classic matted albums that exude elegance.

2) Longevity

Think about your parents wedding album for a second. Is it dated looking? Maybe something along the lines of gold edged mats and heart shape cuts outs on the front? This is another consideration in your album design. Sometimes simple is better. This goes for both the layout of the photos inside and the materials on the outside. If you’re not the kind of person who would get a tattoo because you’ll regret it when you’re older, this might be a good time to think about classic leathers rather than hot pink backgrounds and zebra print covers. Who wants to say their wedding album was “soooooooo 2010″!

IMG_8503

3) Price

Albums ain’t cheap. But this is for good reason. A professionally designed, archival album should last a lifetime. The bindings should stand up to the test of time and the paper and

printing process should make your photos look their best. There are tons of cheap, easy book printing options online for consumers. But I’ve tried them and I can without-a-doubt-say they don’t hold a candle to the companies your photographer can access for you. Plus you’re not just paying for the book. You’re paying for a professionally designed piece of art. Even if your photographer hands over the digital negatives for your use, will you really have the time or the expertise to make your own quality book? Will you look back at it in 10 years and wish you had done it differently?

4) QualityIMG_8518_1

Choose a high quality album with a durable cover material. Leather is classic, stands up to wear and tear, can be treated for water resistance and comes in a variety of colors. Even cooler are new options such as metal, acrylic (looks like

glass!) and canvas printed with any design/photo you want! The albums your photographer offers usually aren’t available to the general public. So the best way to make sure your album is of the highest quality is to work through a professional photographer.

The Take Away:

If you work with a professional photographer it’s likely they’ve done the leg work for you. It can take hours to narrow down the field of options to 2 or 3 albums companies that fit the photographers price range, style of shooting and material preferences. So be thankful you don’t have to bother! Most photographers will offer you an album credit or wedding packages that include albums. Think about a way to fit this in your budget. Ultimately this is the one lasting visual from your wedding day. One you can share with your children, family and friends. This is your legacy, preserve it!

Brad & Beth are Engaged!

April 23, 2010

It’s less than 1 month until I have the privilege of photographing Brad & Beth’s Estes Park Wedding and I’ve been totally remiss in posting this session, plus the blogs been super neglected of late. So let’s just get to the point, pictures YAY!

Also my clients have mad ups. Rad right?

Around here we get a little goofy with our pets. We don’t have kids to exploit share in photographs and thankfully for the world at large we don’t plan t0. But we’ve got pets. Three furry critters who put up with our absurd holiday card photo shoots and a yearly birthday “party”, which usually consists of what some people might consider animal cruelty. Don’t worry, they get a LOT of treats for their efforts and this year they didn’t even have to wear outfits. In fact they made out like bandits with gifts from New Hampshire, sent by their “Grandma”, homemade biscuits with yogurt icing and a pile of cat treats. So in lieu of dress up torture, for this years extra early Easter we present you with your Happy Birthday Easter card from the pets!

I think they all look pretty happy, don’t you??? Also, there is video. I kid you not, we made a video. It will be on Drew’s blog tonight. Post edit coming soon!
