“I Didn’t Ask For It: Rape Is a Crime, Being Raped Is Not”

Today I stumbled upon something beautiful and also frightening. At Confluence Park in Denver, the Guerilla Urban Art Force staged an event to speak out against rape and sexual assaults. The artwork was moving, the experience draining, the statistics staggering. I honored the voices the best way I knew how, in the photos seen below alongside some of the disheartening statistics.

It’s hard to believe that in our advanced culture rape exists. And its even harder to believe the victim is often blamed for the crime. April is sexual assault awareness and prevention month. Together we can stop this horrible crime. Pass it on.

Every 2 minutes, someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted

15 of 16 rapists will never spend a day in jail

Victims of sexual assault are: 3 times more likely to suffer from depression. 6 times more likely to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder. 13 times more likely to abuse alcohol. 26 times more likely to abuse drugs. 4 times more likely to contemplate suicide.

About 3% of American men — or 1 in 33 — have experienced an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime.

44% of victims are under age 18. 80% are under age 30.

Yelp hosted a stellar event last night (Friday the 13th) at Jet Hotel in Denver. Instead of fretting, everyone braved the rush hour snow fall and embraced the dubious day. Psychics told fortunes and Deschutes Brewery kept everyone’s whistle wet. Here are a few highlights below, but you can find all the photos online by clicking here! Before everyone arrived I had my cards read. From left to right: My Past-Judgment, My Present-Peace, My Future-Prince of Wands. Oooohhhhh.

Last night I met someone. His name is “Consumer Bear”. He’s pretty cute and apparently he has his own show on You Tube.

The infamous Tiffany. No not THAT Tiffany. Former Yelp Community Manager Tiffany.

Our current and ever so esteemed Community Manager Laura on the mic, giving out props and prizes!

Somewhere along the night, inspired by my friends Jess and Kevin’s displays of affection the idea to ask people to, ahem, “make out” on camera came about. Surprisingly, pretty much everyone was game to give me their interpretation!

The event was a huge success, hope everyone had as much fun as I did!

With the month of October being recognized as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, The Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep Foundation holds its Annual Fund Drive for six weeks starting in mid-September and ending in October.

President Ronald Reagan enacted Proclamation 5890 in October of 1988 to recognize that each year, approximately a million pregnancies in the United States alone end in miscarriage, stillbirth, or the death of a newborn child. Reagan stated, “A national observance offers us the opportunity to increase our understanding of the great tragedy involved in the deaths of unborn or newborn babies. It also enables us to consider how, as individuals and communities, we can meet the needs of bereaved parents and family members… ” To read the full Proclamation signed by Reagan, CLICK HERE.
