Today is National Coming Out Day. In light of the recent torrent of disheartening news stories, bullying, hideous hate crimes & teen suicides, today should be a day for support of the LGBTQ community. My heart breaks to think we live in a society where these atrocities are possible. But it serves to drive home that we NEED to be committed to changing people’s minds and promoting acceptance, love and kindness, rather than hate and fear. By being an ally, by supporting National Coming Out Day, by encouraging acceptance we can slowly make change in the greater psyche. I’ve collected some stories below, that I think are meaningful on a lot of levels. Because I’m a wedding photographer the majority do focus on love and marriage, but they’re still valid testimony to the necessity of kindness and love in our society.
- DADT prevents American’s from serving their country: http://storycorps.org/listen/stories/kendall-bailey-and-his-friend-don-davis/
- Allow EVERYONE the right to marry, because The Wedding Matters: http://www.couragecampaign.org/page/s/weddingmattersvote
- Support our youth, gay or straight, just show kindness dammit!: http://www.itgetsbetterproject.com/
- A gay man shares the facts on a religious radio station: http://storycorps.org/listen/stories/john-brown-and-his-brother-paul-corbit-brown/
- Just one touching video, from the many awesome real gay weddings over at the fabulous So You’re Engayed! : http://www.soyoureengayged.com/real-weddings/real-gay-wedding-ontario-canada-amy-and-danielle
I think equal rights is simple. Just choose love. Every human being deserves the opportunity to feel like this couple looking back on their MARRIED life together. Don’t you think?
