Rocktober anyone?

When I lived in Boston I witnessed the Sox make a comeback that the world had been waiting for, I watched the Patriots Dynasty come to fruition, and hell I even got hit on by Tom Brady in a bar. But that’s not today’s story, no today is about Rocktober, which if you didn’t know is a nod to the now very popular and suddenly very talented Colorado Rockies.

So talented and so impressive are these newly famous Rockies that we’ve named a month after them here in Colorado. And everyone who never cared about this team is buying tickets. Everyone who wrote off this team as a bunch of silly guys in tight purple uniforms is eating crow, partying in Lodo and jumping on the band wagon. I for one am not one of these people. I saw a game, a boring one with a very empty stadium, early in the season where beer and hot dogs were more entertaining than the task at hand. That said I don’t really like sports and never have, except for the beer and socializing. I felt the same way in Boston, generally unenthusiastic except for when I hoped I wouldn’t die in the rioting.

I suppose the really beautiful thing about the Rockies and their new found fans is a little bit of the American Dream coming to fruition. Who doesn’t want to see the underdog beat the big guys? Weather you feel hopeful, empowered, or even just surprised about the events that have come to pass in the post season (is that the right term?) you have to admit that it is pretty exciting watching a little bit of history unfold in front of you. And for those that truly love the game of baseball it’s likely a pretty thrilling event to take part in.

As for Coloradoans we can all take part in giving our home team some love through the month of October… or not. Whichever floats your boat. Meanwhile Governor Ritter loves his Rockies!
