If you’ve figured out a way to manipulate the time space continuum, let me know.
Lately things have been moving at warp speed and it’s been difficult to sit back, relax and just watch the world. At some point things reach critical mass. For me it’s when my calendar looks like this:
The scary part is that every time I see a reprieve in the distance it ends up filled with a friend or family member visiting, an amazing photo opportunity or something else I just can’t turn away without feeling like I’m giving up a golden opportunity.
FASTER?
Back in High School or College I read James Gleick’s book “Faster” and it rang so true with my then hectic life, which compared to now looks like a vacation. (How do you people with children do it? You’re remarkable and you all deserve a day off. Probably more like a week off!) The book is a marvelous exploration of the ways in which technology has had an impact on speeding up our lives. It covers both the good and bad sides of the trend and really opened my eyes to the ways in which I’ve become obsessed with maximizing my time.
But there are far more important things than maximizing time. Unfortunately it often takes tragedy to come to our senses. I see weddings more weekends out of the year than most people can fathom and they’re filled with love and reverence for relationships and the human spirit, yet I spend most days rushing around missing out on the humanity around me….
Sad News
One month ago today our Kitten Witten passed away. Her death was hectic like our lives. Strange and without explanation (much the way she came to us) she passed in a period of 12 hours, the animal ER giving all they could to save her. Everyone in the house, even the dog who appears dense as brick most days, has been affected by the loss. Last night I just couldn’t stand the sight of our chair back empty. Things aren’t right with no little fluff ball attempting a soft hoarse mew, requesting to be pet. And today, 1 month later, I still feel the pain of her absence. Witten was the kind of cat who warranted her own flickr account. If you’d like to spend some time with her adorableness you can visit her photographic likeness here.
In the wake of this event Drew and I are making strides, albeit small ones, towards slowing things down and trying to find more time for the truly important things in life before they’re gone.
