In the media there are plenty of images of beautiful women for us to aspire to, become frustrated with and be fooled by. I’m both astounded and mesmerized by how extensive the editing of models, celebrities and most of the imagery we see is. The skill with which it is done is impressive, but the end result is deceptive and unrealistic. If a Victoria Secret model doesn’t look like an image of herself in real life how skewed is our perspective of beauty?
For me true beauty is found in real people. It shows through in their spirits, the way they carry themselves, and the people that are attracted by the innate spark that they share. My friend Kharma is one such person. She is by no common definition a supermodel. She is certainly not a size zero and neither are most of the amazing beautiful women I know. Instead the stunning personalities in my life are unique, diverse and compelling. I wanted to capture those qualities in Kharma when I photographed her for her birthday last month. Here are a few of my favorite images:
