The problem with working so many jobs is that down time is a totally mind numbin occurance. What does a girl do with three spare hours before she has to be at work? The answer is easy on the surface. Obviously I should read a book, do some cleaning, pay bills, organize my book shelf and my sock drawer, write letters, catch up on the soaps, play video games, go for a walk, visit the gym, take photographs, edit pictures, update my site, practise Illustrator and Photoshop, call my mom and grandparents, make appointments, balance my check book, read the news, be better informed about the election and numerous other enterprising activities. But there are so many to choose from its overwhelming! My parents tell me that because I work hard its okay to have a chunk of time to do nothing with, but 3 HOURS! Thats soooo much time. This morning I had plans, I went to the dark room for almost 5 hours. I made a ton of prints. It was wonderfully productive. But as the batteries on Michaels Ipod started to die I realized the chemical were getting to me and I was hungry. So I left earlier than I’d planned and thats how I endded up in this predicament. I dont work till 7pm. So now what! Well you want to know what I did with the past 1.5 hours of my 3? I played Amplitude and beat the “Normal” setting, now I have to move onto “Brutal” and try all over again until I get to “Insane”. I also made tea and had four peanut butter cookies. I went on classmates.com to check up on the list of atendees for the reunion. I chatted on AIM with my best friends from high school. I wrote several emails, one to an employer. I’m sure I wasted time in other ways, but I’m looking at another 1.5 hours of down time. I should read my script for my new job. If all goes well and I can pull it off, I’ll be giving food tours with this delightful woman in the North End. I went on the tour last week, it was wonderful! Such delicious food tastings and boundless amounts of information on Italian cusine and custom. I’d never known of the wonderful and unique places in the North End that are on that tour. So if you’re looking for a special but expensive gift or date or things to do with your day idea you should check out her website. www.micheletopor.com
The reality of my downtime is that it will be the last of it until Christmas break. School starts on the 8th (i think) and traning next week. Then I have a solid schedule of food tour mornings, elementary school afternoons and barnes and noble nights. Interspersed with the occasional stint for Stuff@Night and the even more occasional design gig. So I should enjoy it while I can, I just cant help feeling guilty.
