Upper Missouri River – Montana Canoe Trip

I spent a magnificent 7 days in the wilderness of Montana canoeing and camping, completely off the grid. Photos and excerpts from the journal I kept below.

Day 1

A hike into a slot canyon, chalk white and pocked by concretions fallen to the earth. The landscape alien. Rolling rock formations angles edited by time and water. Lewis and Clark were here.

Day 2

From the water, massive cleaves of stone left openings arched and deep like the pulpit of gothic cathedrals. Massive in height, grey and smooth as if carved by man. The river expansive and calm in most places, like a placid lake.

Day 3

Words in the dark. Lulling laughs, gently plucked guitar, a bobbing cacophony drifting across camp and over the current of the Missouri River.

Day 4

The river is flanked by dribbled mountains. Like massive lumpy sand castles. The smooth curvatures and clumsy mounds beautiful with striated colors, muted by today’s cloudy sky. Many Bald Eagles today perched on the rocks above assessing all this splendor. Majestic and patient. Two groups of Bighorn Sheep stared back from the shore as we idled by.

Day 5

We saw the vastness of the range from above. Rolling hills, protruding vistas, striking peaks at all directions and distances. Wildness everywhere. The river snaking wide and unassuming throughout.

Day 6

Our last night. A beautiful camp. The sun is starting to set, glittering on the river rippled by a wind that makes the Cottonwoods sing.
