Because I watch CNN all day at work I’m starting to have an incredibly defeated view of the state of our world. Civil War in Dafur including rape as warfare that the UN can’t diffuse. The current political state of the US, particularly scandal, corruption and poor leadership. War in Iraq that causes more hatred rather than mitagtes the threat of terrorism. And three school shootings in one week, two involving suicidal adult males that killed young girls then turned the guns on themselves.
The most recent tragedy in Pennsylvania strikes a chord because its close to where I grew up, but more so because the Amish community has been tainted by the horror of this man’s actions. These people have chosen a life seperate from the one I know. They choose simplicity and family over immediacy and modern mechanisms. The innocence of the children in that school house has been compromised. I wonder what explanation will suffice for the girls who are struggling for their lives in a community so fraught with religion. Will they believe God had a hand in this? How do people explain such tragedies away?
Some days I feel there is some circular reasoning, some element of everything happening for a reason, what goes around comes around in the karmic circle. This is not one of those days. Today I feel that I’m a happless cog in some evil machine waiting for my time.
My heartfelt shock and condolences go out to the families who have lost their daughters and those who are struggling for their lives in the wake of a troubled man’s terrible actions.
