“a visual life”

Today I went to the library for the first time in a very long time. I wandered into the photography section and spent some time reading about female photographers including Imogen Cunningham, Elsa Dorfman (someone who Michael told me about and I’d somehow overlooked in the past) and Dorothea Lange (who I have always found to be an inspiration). She did not disapoint me today. The start of the book “Dorothea Lange A Visual Life” includes this quote:

“One should really use the camera as though tomorrow you’d be stricken blind. To live a visual life is an enormous understaking, practically unattainable. I have touched it, just touched it.” -D. Lange

Last Thursday night I had my first super fun experience shooting a party for the local magazine “Stuff@Night”. I went down to Saint with Michael’s new D70 and shot some decent images. Nothing amazing, but I had a good time. I met some cool individuals, a few crazy people and a couple genuinely sucky beings. Its harder work than I thought it would be, but I’ll get my name in print and have some experience to add to the resume. The biggest benefit looks like it will be professionals in the entertainment industry asking for my card. It was both rad and embarassing to have the owner of Saint asking me why I didn’t have a business card. But I did give my phone number to one really sweet woman who told me shes always looking for shooters to do publicity events. Now I’m just crossing my fingers that I hear from her again.

In other news I got a new phone and a new number. The phone is a T610. I’m a huge fan of this adorable little piece of technology. I’ve taken a bunch of ugly mobile phone pics and started a new Moblog. You should check it out. If I get a bizillion hits or something I get to be a Moblog star… hmm whats 1 bizillion minus 54? I’m a huge fan of myt610, its got tons of freebies and all sorts of geeky message boards. YAY for being a geek. Also while I was buying the phone the manager asked me if I needed a job. Which led to my producing a resume and having an interview with the District Manager a couple days later. He told me that he’d “give me a shot”, but it was the worst interview ever and I really don’t know if I want to give him a shot. I actually bought my phone from this crazy guy last summer. He seems nice, is well spoken and has a great smile, all the attributes of a professional salesman, but in reality he is completely scatter brained. When I was buying the phone from him the first time he was constantly on the phone, both his own and the store line, he was jumping into other peoples transactions, he was ordering coffee and it took forever. The “interview” was no different. He actually called 411 and his dry cleaners to find out what time they were open until and that was only the finale to taking a call from his mom, sucking up to his distributer Stu over his cell phone, arguing with someone about a phone number over the store line and delegating tasks to his staff after chastizing them for breaking his CD player. Now I do have to acknowledge the fact that he apologized and claimed it was the worst interview he ever gave and maybe he is a perfectly nice guy, but I don’t know. Both experiences I’ve had haven’t been great. Do I really want to work for this guy?

August is fast approaching. I’m going home Sat for a few days to attend the local firemans carnival, see my crazy brother who is home (sorta) for the first time in 3 years, and RSVP for my 5 year reunion. Oh and I’ll be avoiding the DNC like the plague and not coming back until after the craziness has cleared out of Boston.

I’m really upset about the last entry I wrote having gone missing… if Nick hadn’t sent me that stupid file that didnt work and screwed up the already worthless computer I was on… well, its my own fault for not saving it. Sigh.
